AHRC Block Grant Partnership Doctoral Studentship


Key Information
Doctoral awards provide support for up to three years of full-time study, or up to five years of part-time study (and in exceptional cases full-time up to four years or part-time up to seven years), to enable you to pursue and complete a programme of doctoral research and gain a doctoral degree.

In awarding studentships for doctoral research we assume that a doctoral thesis is a piece of work that:

• exhibits substantial evidence of original scholarship and contains material that can be prepared for publication, and
• can be produced by a capable, well-qualified and diligent student, properly supervised and supported, within the period of award.

We expect full-time award holders to submit their doctoral thesis within four years of the start of the award. Part-time students should submit their thesis within seven years.

Awards cover fees and maintenance for UK students, and fees-only funding for EU students.

AHRC Block Grant Partnership Research Preparation Master's Studentship


Key Information
The Research Preparation Master's Award provides funding for postgraduate taught Masters, MPhil) courses that focus on advanced study and research training in the Arts and Humanities.

The award is explicitly intended to provide a foundation for further research and covers fees and maintenance for the duration of the Master's programme for UK students, and fees-only funding for EU students.

One award is available for History to cover fees and maintenance.

ARM Ltd University of Liverpool Engineering Scholarship/Internship


Key Information
The ARM Scholarship Scheme is an opportunity for Masters students from India to gain paid work experience in the R&D department of a multinational company, and receive a generous scholarship.

This includes:

• a £6,200 R&D scholarship to cover fees and living expenses
• a guaranteed four-month internship (June - Sept 2011) with ARM R&D in Cambridge, UK with graduate intern level salary.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the award, you must be:

• from India
• holding an offer for the MSc(Eng) Microelectronic Systems (preferred) or MSc(Eng) Microelectronic Systems and Telecommunications
• holding a first class BE, BSc, ME, BTech degree in a relevant subject (ideally Computer Science with a good background in Computer Hardware).

You must also have:

• First class BSc, BE or BTech degree in a relevant subject (ideally Computer Science with a good background in computer hardware).
• A keen and demonstrable interest in research, computer architecture, parallel programming, security, compilers, operating systems, C and assembly languages, software virtual machines, algorithms and data structures.
• Experience and ability with prototyping/scripting languages, modifying and porting large software systems (OSs, compilers, simulators), parallel and SIMD programming, benchmarking and analysis.
• Good English language skills (minimum IELTS 6.5/TOEFL 230 + ER 4.0 or 70% in English at Standard XII from central or metro state boards).
• Relevant work experience in embedded systems, system on chip or IC design.

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund


Key Information
Founded in 1967 to mark Canada’s centennial, the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF) provides awards ranging from £500 to £3,000 to Canadian men and women for academic and artistic study in the UK.

Applicants undertaking a one-year programme are not eligible to apply.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply for a CCSF award, an applicant must:

•Be a Canadian citizen: proof of Canadian citizenship is required in the form of a photocopy of your passport details.
•Be currently enrolled in a postgraduate programme and at the time of applying be attending a full-time UK university or similar institution, and have completed at least one term of study, with at least one term remaining from September 2012. (Applicants undertaking a one-year programme are not eligible)
•Have very high academic standards.
•Require funds to complete their studies.
•Previous applicants may re-apply.

Chevening Scholarships


Key Information
Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion and academia. Most scholars undertake a one year master’s degree.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should be:

There is no co-ordinated global launch of the programme. British missions around the world will advertise Chevening separately, so timings will vary. Some Embassies will advertise as early as late autumn, while others will start as late as spring.

Commonwealth Scholarships: Developing Countries Scheme


Key Information
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC) supports around 700 awards annually. Awards are funded by the Department for International Development (for developing Commonwealth countries), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Scottish Government (for developed Commonwealth countries), and UK universities.

If you are a citizen of a developing Commonwealth country, you can apply for split-site PhD study at Liverpool.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should:
• Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons.
• Be permanently resident in a Commonwealth country other than the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
• Be available to commence their academic studies in the United Kingdom by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2013.
• Hold, by October 2013, a first degree of upper second class Honours standard (or above) or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master’s degree.

The Commission wishes to promote equal opportunity, gender equity and cultural exchange. Applications are welcomed from the many different races and origins that comprise the Commonwealth’s rich variety of cultures, traditions and institutions.

How to Apply
The Commission invites the nomination of candidates for Common -
wealth Scholarships from a number of sources. These are described below.
Candidates may choose any of these ‘nominating routes’ for any category
of award, subject to the exceptions noted. Candidates must, however,
apply locally in the first instance. The Commission does not accept
direct applications.

For 12 months’ non-degree study in the United Kingdom on a Split-Site
basis to aid the completion of a doctoral degree undertaken at a
university in the candidate’s home country nominations are invited through the following channels:

• The candidate’s national Commonwealth Scholarship agency. This
is the main route of application and a full list of Commonwealth
Scholarship agency addresses can be obtained from the CSC website
• The Executive Head of an eligible developing country university on
whose staff the applicant serves. (In the case of Bangladesh and India,

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme


Key Information
The University of Liverpool is pleased to be able to offer two scholarships at taught postgraduate level to candidates from Commonwealth developing countries in 2012/13. The awards are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and the University of Liverpool. The scheme is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

The aim of the Scheme is to assist students from developing Commonwealth countries who are of excellent academic calibre but for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the United Kingdom. The Scheme allows the successful scholars to benefit from postgraduate study at a University in the United Kingdom which will help them to contribute toward the development of their home countries.

The scholarship meets the full costs of an award holder’s study at the University, which consists of:

• air fares to and from the UK
• a maintenance allowance (£882 per month in 2011/12)
• payment of the overseas tuition fee
• arrival allowance
• dissertation costs
• study travel grant
• financial support to cover the cost of excess baggage

• have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
• not be employed by a national government department or parastatal organisation
• are themselves, or through their families, unable to pay to study in the United Kingdom
• will return to their home country as soon as their award comes to an end

How to Apply
Before submitting an application, all candidates should make a University of Liverpool application of study for one of the eligible postgraduate degree programmes. Please note that any application made for the scholarship that does not hold an offer of admission by the deadline of March 30th 2012 will be automatically rejected. Please also note that the competition will not be open before January 13th 2012 and it would be advisable to wait until after this date to send an application.
Once a successful academic application has been made, the application for this funding must be made directly to the University of Liverpool via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s Electronic Application System (EAS).

The University will be the judges of academic calibre and will forward its nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for its agreement. We normally advise candidates of the result no later than July 2012.

Duncan Norman Research Scholarship


Key Information
The objective of the Scholarship is to enable academically gifted students who also have the personal qualities to make them leaders in society, to pursue PhD study at the University of Liverpool.

One Scholarship shall be awarded annually, and competition therefore is very strong.

This prestigious Scholarship consists of the following funding and research support:

- Competitive annual maintenance stipend of £17,500 (or top-up to this level of maintenance if the candidate is in receipt of Research Council funding)
- Full payment of tuition fees (Home, EU or Overseas)
- Free accommodation on the University campus or an accommodation allowance
- Laptop or desktop computer and printer
- Support for conference expenses
- Annual travel expenses from the home country to Liverpool (for EU/Overseas candidate)
- A one month InterRail Pass for travel around Europe

The Scholarship is awarded for one year in the first instance and, subject to satisfactory academic progress, will be renewed for a total period of up to three years.
Eligibility Criteria
The Scholarship is open for application to all prospective full-time postgraduate research students irrespective of nationality, tuition fee status or subject area.

Please note that prospective MRes, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and currently registered University of Liverpool MPhil/PhD students, are not eligible for application to this scholarship.

Prospective applicants must hold a formal offer of study for a PhD programme at the University of Liverpool for the given academic session (i.e. from 1 October) and only students who already hold, or are likely to attain in forthcoming examinations, a first-class honours degree (or its equivalent) are likely to be considered by the University’s Fees and Scholarships Sub-Committee.

Faculty Postgraduate Scholarships


Key Information
50 competitive scholarships are available for international Postgraduate Master's (including MRes) students across all faculties.

The Faculty Postgraduate Scholarships take the form of a £3,000 reduction in the fee level.

Fulbright Award


Key Information
This prestigious scholarship, which is co-funded by the Fulbright Commission and the University of Liverpool, is offered to enable a US citizen per year to study any subject at postgrad level at the University of Liverpool.

The award of £20,000 is tenable for the first year of postgraduate study and is intended to contribute to both tuition fees and living costs.

The aim of the Fulbright award scheme is to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.
Eligibility Criteria
This is a competitive scholarship which is open to US citizens pursuing postgraduate taught study or postgraduate research.

The following minimum requirements also apply:

• rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence
• strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK
• interest in the peoples and cultures of the UK
• a clear set of objectives for the Fulbright year
• commitment to the host community through volunteer and extra-curricular activity.

Hodgson Law Scholarships


Key Information
The Hodgson Law Scholarships were established after the death of Elizabeth Hodgson pursuant to the Hodgson Will Trust.

The Scholarships is to reward academic, professional and leadership qualities.

The committee chooses 2 Hodgson Law Scholars each year from LLM applicants.

All university tuition fees will be paid on the Hodgson Law Scholars’ behalf by the Hodgson Trustees. In addition, each Hodgson Law Scholar will receive a maintenance allowance of £5,000 as a contribution towards their living expenses in the UK.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have completed or be in the final year of completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree at a minimum 2.1 (UK upper second) or equivalent standard.

Only non-EU international students may apply.

The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to the strongest candidate based on Academic ability, evidence of an interest legal and public service which may benefit Liverpool and its region, potential and ambition for future leadership.

Hong Kong Graduate Association Awards


Key Information
The University of Liverpool Graduate Association (Hong Kong) was established in 1989 and is one of our most prominent and active Alumni Associations. The scholarship fund was founded in 1997 following a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor and has awarded various scholarships over the years.

The objectives of the scholarships are to promote educational exchange and academic research respectively, between the University of Liverpool and residents of Hong Kong SAR and China.

Each post graduate research scholarship will be tenable for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

The value of the scholarship (£2000) will cover part payment of the annual tuition fees or living expenses.

Eligibility Criteria
You must be from Hong Kong or China and have been admitted to pursue full-time, postgraduate research studies leading to a PhD degree in your chosen fields in the forthcoming academic year at the University of Liverpool.

Current students originating from Hong Kong/China who are already in their first or second year of postgraduate research studies at the University of Liverpool at the time of application are also eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Each scholarship is tenable for a period not exceeding three years. Renewal of the scholarship is subject to a satisfactory report and good academic performance on an annual basis.

HRH Princess Sirindhorn University of Liverpool Scholarship


Key Information
The University of Liverpool has introduced a prestigious scholarship in honour of HRH Princess Sirindhorn, who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Liverpool in March 2006.

One full scholarship will be awarded annually to enable a Thai student to come to Liverpool to complete a one-year taught Masters programme.

The scholarship will cover both tuition fees and £9,000 living costs for the year of study.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

• be a Thai national
• already hold an offer to study a one-year taught Masters programme at the University of Liverpool.

The scholarship is open to all subjects offered a one-year taught Masters programme, however priority will be given to those students who wish to study in a subject area associated with HRH Princess Sirindhorn such as science, IT, medicine, the arts, geography, history and languages.

Hsiang Su Coppin Memorial Scholarship Fund

THIS AWARD IS UNDER REVIEW FOR 2012/13.

The Hsiang Su Coppin Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 as a result of a generous donation of funds to the University of Liverpool from the estate of the late Mrs Hsiang Su Coppin.

Applications are welcomed from undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students who are nationals of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and are resident in the PRC at the time when the application to the University of Liverpool is made.

The value and number of awards made from the fund varies, but it is unlikely that the total value of awards made will exceed £2,500 in any one year.

Awards are normally made on the basis of academic merit, although the university reserves the right to target certain ethnic minorities within China, as deemed appropriate within the terms of Mrs Coppin's will.

India Postgraduate Taught Award

The India Postgraduate Taught Award is a £1,000 fee discount, available to Indian nationals with OSI fee status. This is deducted automatically as part of admissions’ process.

John Lennon Memorial Scholarship


Key Information
The John Lennon Memorial Scholarship is intended to support students in financial need and enhance, among other things, awareness of global problems and environmental issues.
Eligibility Criteria
Current and prospective Home and EU undergraduates and postgraduates (taught and research), in any subject area, who have accepted the University of Liverpool as their first choice university, are eligible to apply.

Please note that the Scholarships Sub-Committee may additional eligibility criteria to the list above. For example, the Sub-Committee may target some awards at particular disciplines or levels, if deemed appropriate.

It is anticipated that up to 11 awards will be available in 2012/13. These include a number of awards for postgraduate research students (renewable for up to 3 years subject to satisfactory academic progress), a number of full standard-fee awards for postgraduate taught and MRes students, and a number of grants for undergraduate students.

LIC Faculty Scholarship


Key Information
Students studying at Liverpool International College (LIC) have the chance to compete for a £2000 Faculty Scholarship, conditional on them achieveing the AAB equivalent of 70%. There are 50 scholarships available in total for postgraduate taught programmes (PGT).
